The Steering Committee of the Subaru Owners Club of Jamaica (SOCOJ) proudly supports the educational development of the children of this country, as its members believe that it is through education that a country can truly develop. It is on this basis that we seek your support in assisting the Padmore Primary School to acquire several basic amenities and facilities which are needed in support of the school programme.
As we are a social group and as such by no means possess the necessary financial resources to contribute to the overall school improvement programme, we have sought the assistance of several corporate entities. We are now asking you kindly to pledge your support and/or contribution to assist us to acquire the necessary resources to support at least one of the areas listed below.
The Padmore Primary School is situated in Padmore District, a community in the sub-urban area of Red Hills, St. Andrew. The school caters to the educational needs of children between the ages of 7 and 12 years and was placed on the list of institutions to be closed down by the Ministry of Education in 2011. Its principal Miss Keisha Hayle, who was placed to oversee the closure at that time, shortly developed a more progressive vision for the future of the institution. Upon familiarizing herself with the institution and its needs, she recognized the importance of the school in the community and worked tirelessly to see to its turnaround. Since her intervention and with the help of a team of highly committed school staff, the population of the school increased from approximately 80 in 2011 to currently over 200, significantly changing its academic landscape. Currently the school is one of the top performing primary institutions in both the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) and Grade Four Literacy Examinations; and has had a number of successes in terms of students who have passed for several traditional high schools such as Campion College, Jamaica College, and the Queens High School.
In trying to move the school forward, Principal Hayle has made many personal sacrifices including the selling of a house to purchase a school bus, pay staff members, and make a small addition to the kitchen, among other minor improvements. Though Miss Hayle’s sacrifices have made a positive impact on the school, and her media outcry has commanded attention from various organizations, the school is still in need of major improvements including:
a) a forty foot container to be used to provide additional classrooms;
b) the overhaul of the kitchen (which is used in the school feeding program);
c) the replacement/repair of the existing metal water tank;
d) the renovation of the existing bathroom facilities;
e) a suitable space that would facilitate the teaching of physical education – such as a multipurpose court;
f) additional outside pipes for hand washing;
g) proper lighting for corridor and classrooms; and
h) classroom partitions.
The SOCOJ came to learn of Padmore Primary School through the electronic and social media where it was broadcast that Miss Hayle was about to put her motor vehicle up for sale in order to raise additional funds to support the school. Through our meeting with the principal and a tour of the school grounds in August 2015, the Steering Committee members were touched and inspired by this amazing success story and have pledged to put our support behind the school.
Please contact, whether via email or telephone, the undersigned to make your pledge. Feel free also to make contact to meet and discuss the possibilities in the best interest of the school and towards the development of our young people as we strive for the advancement of our country. We also look forward to your participation in our future fund raising events towards this worthy cause.
